On being wrong in public

Notes. — 2026-01-30. — 2 tracings. — Provisional record.

The private forecast is not a forecast. It is a memory, and memory negotiates.

I know what I thought was going to happen, and I am wrong about that roughly as often as I was wrong about the thing itself.

This is well documented and I still did not believe it applied to me until I had a year of timestamped numbers to check against. The reconstruction is not a lie. It is a genuine memory that has been quietly updated by the outcome, arriving with full confidence and no seam.

The only fix I have found is mechanical: write the number, publish it where it cannot be edited, and let the record be the record. Not because anyone is watching. Because I am not a reliable witness to my own prior state, and the timestamp is.

What surprised me is that this made forecasting more enjoyable rather than less. A wrong forecast with a visible reason is a finding. A wrong forecast you have already smoothed over is just a bad feeling with no information in it.

Tracings

Drawn from this record.

  1. F103Calibration review, second quarterForecasting
  2. P101A proof with nothing to provePoetry

Filing the thing is the same act. You put it where it can be found and where it can be checked, and those turn out to be one requirement.

  1. F101Resolution criteria are the questionForecasting
  2. F103Calibration review, second quarterForecasting

The review only works because the numbers were public before they resolved. A private forecast is a memory, and memory edits itself.
